Why your car AC works so hard here
A car left outside in Abu Dhabi summer can have an interior far hotter than the air outside. When you start the engine, the AC has to pull that heat out of the cabin, then keep fighting the sun through the glass for the whole drive.
That load wears components faster. The compressor runs almost constantly, the condenser at the front of the car collects dust and sand, and rubber seals and hoses harden in the heat. A small leak that would take years to matter in a mild climate can leave the system low on refrigerant much sooner.
The good news is that most AC problems start small. Catching them early usually means a simpler fix.
Signs your car AC needs attention
Do not wait until the AC stops cooling completely. Common warning signs include:
- Warm or only slightly cool air even with the AC at its coldest setting.
- Cooling that comes and goes, cold for a while and then warm.
- Weak airflow from the vents even with the fan on high.
- Unpleasant smell when you switch on the AC, often a musty odour from the cabin filter or evaporator.
- Strange noises such as rattling, squealing or clicking when the AC is on.
- Water inside the car on the passenger footwell, which can mean a blocked drain.
- The AC takes much longer to cool the cabin than it used to.
Any of these is worth a check, particularly before the hottest months.
What is AC gas and when do you need a refill?
People often say "AC gas", but the correct term is refrigerant. It is the substance that absorbs heat from the cabin and carries it outside. The system is sealed, so in theory refrigerant should not run out. In practice, tiny leaks at joints, hoses or seals let it escape slowly.
If the system is low, the AC cools poorly. But simply topping it up without finding the leak is a short-term fix at best, because it will drain again. A proper car AC gas refill starts by checking the system for leaks and pressure, then refilling to the amount your car specifies.
If someone offers to just add gas without checking anything, ask questions. Tell us what your AC is doing and we will explain what we would check first.
How an AC check and service works
Every car is different, but a sensible AC service usually follows this path:
- We ask about the symptoms: when it started, whether it is constant, any smells or noises.
- We check airflow, the temperature at the vents and whether the compressor engages.
- The system pressure is checked and the lines, joints and condenser are inspected for leaks or blockage.
- We look at the cabin filter, which can restrict airflow and cause smells.
- If refrigerant is needed, the system is refilled to the correct amount for your car.
- Cooling is tested again before you drive away.
If we find a failed part such as a compressor or a leaking line, we will explain what we found and what it would take to fix it before going further.
Common AC problems beyond low gas
Low refrigerant is only one reason for weak cooling. Others include:
- Blocked or dirty condenser. Sand and dust at the front of the car stop heat escaping.
- Compressor trouble. The compressor may not engage, or it may be noisy or worn.
- Clogged cabin filter. Airflow drops and smells appear.
- Faulty cooling fans. The AC may work on the move but struggle in traffic.
- Electrical faults. Blown fuses, relays or switches.
- Blend door or control problems. Air is cold on one side and warm on the other, or temperature settings seem ignored.
This is why a quick check beats guessing. The right fix depends on the cause.
Simple habits that help your car AC
You cannot stop the Abu Dhabi sun, but a few habits reduce the strain on your AC:
- Park in shade or use a windscreen sun shade.
- On hot days, open the windows briefly after starting to let the worst heat out, then close them and switch on the AC.
- Use the recirculation setting once the cabin is cooling, which helps it cool faster.
- Run the AC for a few minutes regularly, even in winter, so seals and the compressor stay lubricated.
- Do not ignore small drops in cooling. They tend to get worse.
These habits are common sense, not a replacement for a service when something is wrong.
Combine it with a visit for your tyres
Many drivers book their AC check before summer starts, which is also a good time to look at tyres. Hot tarmac and high pressure do not mix well with worn rubber, and our free safety check covers wear, pressure and damage. If something turns up, we can talk through our tyres, puncture repair and wheel alignment options in the same visit.
If you also need help with your gearbox oil or battery, see our gearbox oil change and battery replacement pages.
Get your AC checked
The simplest way to start is to call us on 050 019 0193 or WhatsApp us with your car make, model and year and a short description of what the AC is doing. We will tell you what to expect and when to bring the car in. We are in Shakhbout City, convenient from Baniyas, Al Shamkha, Mohamed Bin Zayed City and Khalifa City. Find us through the Shakhbout City tyre shop page or the contact page.
Please always check with us before travelling, as the work available can change.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my car AC blowing warm air?
The most common reasons are low refrigerant from a leak, a compressor that is not engaging, a blocked condenser or an electrical fault. The cause needs checking before the right fix is clear. Call or WhatsApp 050 019 0193 with your car model and symptoms.
What does a car AC gas refill involve?
A proper refill starts by checking the system for leaks and pressure, then filling to the amount your car specifies. Topping up without checking for leaks usually means the cooling fades again.
How often should I service my car AC?
As a rule of thumb, having it checked once a year before the hot season is sensible in the UAE, or sooner if cooling drops. Check your owner's manual and ask us if you are not sure.
Why does my car AC smell bad?
Musty smells often come from moisture and dirt on the evaporator or a dirty cabin filter. Mention the smell when you contact us and we will check the likely causes with you.
Does the AC cool better when the car is moving?
If it cools on the move but poorly at traffic lights, a weak cooling fan or blocked condenser could be responsible. Tell us when the problem happens as it helps narrow it down.
Can you fix my AC at the roadside or at home?
Our mobile service is mainly for tyres. For AC problems, WhatsApp us your location and the problem, and we will tell you honestly what we can and cannot do remotely.
Do I need to book a car AC check?
It is best to call or WhatsApp first so we can tell you what to expect and when to come in. Message us on 050 019 0193 with your car model and what the AC is doing.
