What wheel balancing does
No tyre and wheel assembly is perfectly even. There is always a slightly heavier spot somewhere around the circumference. At low speed you will never notice. At highway speed, that tiny imbalance is thrown around a thousand times a minute and shows up as vibration.
Balancing finds the heavy spots and offsets them with small weights fixed to the rim, so the wheel rotates evenly. The aim is simple: a wheel that spins true, with no shake going up into the steering column or the seat.
Why it matters on UAE roads
Much of our driving here is sustained high speed: Abu Dhabi to Dubai, out to Al Ain, or the daily run on the main highways. Vibration that is tolerable in town becomes tiring and unsafe at those speeds.
It is not just comfort. An out-of-balance wheel hammers the tyre, bearings, shock absorbers and suspension joints continuously. Over time that causes uneven tyre wear, often in patches or cupping, and speeds up wear on parts that are costly to replace. In summer, hot asphalt makes the effects worse because the tyre is already working hard.
Signs your wheels need balancing
- Steering wheel vibration that appears at a certain speed range, often between about 80 and 120 km/h, and may fade above or below it.
- Vibration through the seat or floor, which usually points to the rear wheels.
- Patchy or scalloped tyre wear, with high and low spots in the tread.
- A noticeable hum or drumming from one corner of the car.
- Recent tyre change or repair where balancing was skipped.
If the car pulls to one side rather than shaking, that is more likely an alignment issue. If you are not sure, tell us what you feel and at what speed, and we can usually narrow it down.
When to balance, as a rule of thumb
Typically, balancing should be done:
- Every time a new tyre is fitted, as part of the tyre change.
- After a puncture repair or any time a tyre has been taken off the rim.
- When you rotate tyres, if you notice vibration afterwards.
- If you hit a kerb or pothole and feel new shaking.
- Any time you feel vibration that was not there before.
Balancing weights can also fall off, especially after hitting a kerb or a deep pothole, so a car that was smooth last month may not be today.
How the job goes
- Remove the wheel from the car and take off the old weights.
- Check the tyre and rim for damage, stones in the tread, bent rims or uneven seating. A damaged rim cannot be balanced properly.
- Spin the wheel on the balancer, which shows where the heavy spot is and how much weight is needed.
- Fix the weights to the rim in the right positions.
- Refit the wheel with the nuts tightened properly, and re-check if anything looked odd.
We do all four wheels, not just the one that feels worst, because uneven weight on any corner affects the others over time.
When balancing is not the whole answer
Sometimes the shake does not go away after balancing. That does not mean the job was done wrong. Other things that cause vibration include a bent rim, a bulge in a tyre sidewall, worn wheel bearings, loose suspension joints, or brake discs that are warped.
If that is the case, we will say so and point you toward the next check rather than keep balancing the same wheel. A short chat on WhatsApp before you come, with a photo of the tyres, can save you a trip.
Balancing with new tyres and nitrogen
If you are fitting new tyres, balancing is part of the job, not an optional extra. You can also ask about nitrogen inflation while you are here, and our free safety check is a good time to look at wear patterns that might point to an alignment need.
Not sure whether you need new tyres at all? Bring the car in and we will look. If you do, see our tyres page for how to read your size and which brands we stock.

Frequently asked questions
What does wheel balancing do?
It corrects uneven weight distribution around a tyre and wheel assembly by adding small weights to the rim. The result is a wheel that spins smoothly, which reduces vibration, protects suspension parts and helps tyres wear evenly.
Why does my steering wheel shake at high speed?
The most common cause is an unbalanced front wheel, usually noticeable between about 80 and 120 km/h. Other causes include bent rims, damaged tyres or worn suspension parts, so a proper check is the best way to be sure.
Do I need balancing every time I change tyres?
Yes, as a rule of thumb. Every new tyre should be balanced when fitted, and balancing is also recommended after a puncture repair or any time a tyre has been removed from its rim.
Is wheel balancing the same as wheel alignment?
No. Balancing is about weight distribution and removes vibration. Alignment is about wheel angles and fixes pulling and uneven edge wear. Many drivers need both, and they are often done in the same visit.
Can I balance just one wheel?
You can, but we usually recommend all four. Imbalance on one corner can disguise or create problems on another, and uneven vibration is easier to solve when all four wheels are set correctly.
How do I book wheel balancing in Abu Dhabi?
Call or WhatsApp 050 019 0193 and tell us your car model and when the vibration happens. We will let you know when to come to our Shakhbout City shop.
