Why gearbox oil matters in UAE heat

Your gearbox is full of gears, bearings and clutch parts that spin against each other all day. Gearbox oil lubricates them, carries heat away and, in an automatic, also helps the transmission change gear smoothly. As it ages it picks up tiny metal and clutch particles and slowly loses its ability to protect.

Heat is the main enemy, and Abu Dhabi has plenty of it. Summer temperatures are high, stop-start traffic keeps the transmission working without much cooling airflow, and towing or a loaded car pushes temperatures up further. Transmission oil that runs hot for long periods breaks down faster than the same oil would in a cooler climate.

The oil in the gearbox is out of sight, so it is easy to forget. A gear oil change at the right time saves a lot of effort and worry compared with dealing with a gearbox that has started to struggle.

Signs your gearbox oil is due

Gearboxes rarely fail without hints. Watch for these signs:

  • Harsh or jerky shifts, especially between first and second or when pulling away.
  • Slipping: the engine revs rise but the car does not pick up speed to match.
  • Delay in engaging when you move from Park to Drive or Reverse.
  • Whining, humming or clunking that changes with speed or gear.
  • A burnt smell after driving, which can mean overheated fluid.
  • Dark or dirty fluid. Fresh automatic transmission fluid is usually reddish and clear, while old fluid turns dark brown or black.
  • Drips under the car near the middle of the vehicle.

None of these proves the oil is the only cause, but they are all good reasons to have the gearbox looked at. If you are not sure, bring the car in or send us a message and we will talk it through.

How a gearbox oil change works, step by step

The job is straightforward, but the details matter. A proper transmission oil change usually goes like this:

  1. The car is lifted so the underside of the gearbox is reachable.
  2. The drain plug is removed and the old gearbox oil is drained into a catch tray.
  3. The drain plug is refitted and tightened.
  4. Fresh oil is added through the fill point, using the fluid your manufacturer specifies for your gearbox.
  5. The level is checked in the way your gearbox requires, which differs between models, and topped up if needed.
  6. The underside is checked for leaks around the plugs, seals and pan.

Some gearboxes have a pan, a filter or a particular filling procedure that affects exactly how the job is done. That is why we ask for your make, model and year before we start, and why we follow the maker's procedure rather than guessing. If anything looks unusual, we will tell you before going further.

ATF, manual gear oil, CVT and DCT fluids

Not every gearbox uses the same oil, and the wrong one can do real harm. In broad terms:

  • Automatic gearboxes use automatic transmission fluid, usually called ATF. Different makers specify different ATF types.
  • Manual gearboxes use gear oil, which is thicker and has a different job from ATF.
  • CVT gearboxes need their own CVT fluid, and it is not interchangeable with normal ATF.
  • Dual-clutch (DCT) gearboxes often need a specific DCT fluid.

Even inside one category, specifications differ from car to car. The rule is simple: use the grade your manufacturer specifies for your exact gearbox, not whatever is on the shelf. If you are not sure what gearbox you have, send your car make, model and year on WhatsApp and we will help you confirm the type before you come.

How often should you change gearbox oil?

The right interval depends on your car, your gearbox type and how you drive, so your owner's manual comes first. As a rule of thumb, many makers list somewhere in the range of 40,000 to 80,000 km for automatics, but please check your manual rather than rely on that figure.

The shorter end of the range often makes sense if you:

  • Drive mostly in stop-and-go city traffic.
  • Tow a trailer or regularly carry heavy loads.
  • Drive in extreme summer heat or on dusty roads.
  • Have a higher-mileage car with no known service history.

Some cars are sold with a "lifetime" fluid label. In Gulf heat, that label deserves a second look. Fluid that is called lifetime is often meant to last the life of the warranty period in milder conditions, not forever in ours. If your car has high mileage and has never had its gearbox oil changed, it is worth asking about it.

Why do it at a tyre shop?

A gearbox oil change needs the car lifted, which also gives a clear view of everything underneath. Because Kayan Plus is a tyre shop, we are used to checking tyre wear, pressure and damage, and our free safety check covers exactly those things while the car is here.

That makes the visit useful in more than one way. If the car has been pulling to one side, ask about a wheel alignment. If it vibrates at speed, ask about wheel balancing. Often it all fits into one trip, so you do not need to cross Abu Dhabi twice.

We would rather tell you honestly what your car needs, and what it does not, than sell you extras.

What to bring and what to ask

A few details help us prepare properly:

  • Your car make, model and year.
  • Whether the gearbox is automatic, manual, CVT or dual-clutch, if you know.
  • When the gearbox oil was last changed, if you know it.
  • Any symptoms you have noticed: harsh shifts, slipping, noises or smells.

You can also ask us what the manufacturer lists for your gearbox, and ask to see the old oil so you can judge its colour for yourself.

We are in Shakhbout City, an easy drive from Baniyas, Al Shamkha and Mohamed Bin Zayed City. Directions are on our Shakhbout City tyre shop page.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I get a gearbox oil change in Abu Dhabi?

Kayan Plus Tyres in Shakhbout City handles gearbox and transmission oil changes alongside tyre services, so you can have your tyres checked on the same visit. Call or WhatsApp 050 019 0193 with your car make, model and year to confirm.

How often should I change my gearbox oil in the UAE?

Follow your owner's manual first. As a rule of thumb, many makers list somewhere in the range of 40,000 to 80,000 km for automatics, and heat, traffic and towing can justify the shorter end. Ask us if your manual says the fluid is lifetime.

What is the difference between ATF and gear oil?

ATF is the fluid used in most automatic gearboxes, while manual gearboxes use thicker gear oil. CVT and dual-clutch gearboxes often need their own specific fluids. Always use the grade your manufacturer lists for your exact gearbox.

How do I know if my gearbox needs new oil?

Harsh shifts, slipping, a delay when selecting Drive or Reverse, whining or humming noises, a burnt smell and dark fluid are common signs. They can have other causes too, so message us and we will help you work out the next step.

Do you change the oil in the engine as well?

Not at the moment. We currently handle only gearbox and transmission oil, plus our tyre and wheel services. For the oil in the engine, you will need to go to another workshop. Call or WhatsApp 050 019 0193 if you are unsure what your car needs.

Do I need an appointment?

It is best to call or WhatsApp first so we can check your gearbox type and tell you when to come. Message us on 050 019 0193 with your car make, model and year, and we will guide you.

Can you check my tyres during the same visit?

Yes. We offer a free safety check covering tyre wear, pressure and visible damage, so you can handle the gearbox oil change and your tyres in one trip. Tell us when you call or message.
